A protozoan infection caused by a parasite usually found in the intestines of animals.  Once transmitted to humans by direct contact with the infected animal or person to person, it lodges in the intestines and causes severe diarrhea, dehydration and malnutrition in persons with AIDS.  While this infection seems to be occuring more frequently in the immunodepressed, one study reports incidence in healthy persons as well.
